Why do I need an additional outlet?

An additional outlet is a TV point in another room in your house that will enable you to operate a Freeview TV or Freeview  decoder in that room. An additional TV outlet in any room may ease viewing tensions at home and can usually be connected to your current antenna system. Abacus TV will install as many additional outlets as you require anywhere in your home, even the garage!

Pay TV on multiple TVs from one decoder?

It’s possible to feed signal from your Pay TV decoder to other TVs in your house via coaxial cable. Why not get the full benefit of your Pay TV service?

What kind of warranty do you have?

We provide a 24 month warranty on workmanship and a 12 month full replacement warranty on materials/components.

How accurate are your quotes for full installations?

90% of the time the quotes on our homepage are accurate. The install method at this price point does not  include running cables inside walls. However every effort is made to put the dish or UHF antenna in an inobtrusive position and to run cables as tidily and discreetly as possible.

If you are in a low signal area (for UHF signal) it may be necessary to use a more powerful antenna or amplify your signal. This can add $30 and $70 to your install respectively.

Are your materials high quality?

At Abacus TV we use only digital quality RG6 coaxial cable. Our antennas and dishes are robust and have proven very reliable over time in Wellington's sometimes inclement conditions.

All connecting points (antenna to cable, cable to wall plate, wall plate to fly lead) from the antenna  to your TV  are made with F-type connectors rather  than the old style ‘Belling Lee’ plug in type fitting. This fitting uses thread rather than friction to make the connection and provides the strongest signal possible as well as being far less likely to loosen over time.

What is the reason for my poor UHF reception?

Often when you get a Freeview HD decoder or TV it will work fine with your current UHF antenna. Sometimes it does not. This can be due to a number of reasons such as;

  • damaged dish
  • corrosion at connection points
  • poor quality cable (often older homes are cabled with cable inferior to RG6 coaxial cable which is best for digital signal.

If you are experiencing a fault Abacus TV can pinpoint the cause of the poor signal and ensure the fault is fixed as economically as possible.

Do I need a new TV?

You do not need a new TV, for both satellite and UHF Freeview you can buy a decoder which will work with any existing TV.

Can I record Freeview?

The easiest way to record Freeview is to use a PDR with a hard drive like the My Freeview products (click here for more information). The major benefits of these devices is they enable you to record more than one channel concurrently and record a whole series direct from the electronic programme guide (EPG).

You can record to freeview to your existing VCR or DVD recorder but can only record the channel you are currently watching. This is because your existing VCR or DVD recorder does not have a built-in Freeview tuner.

Why Digital TV?

Digital TV is the new way our television signals are broadcast. Until now, free to air television in New Zealand has been broadcast via analogue transmission.

Digital signals use less bandwidth so your viewing experience is enhanced with superior pictures and sound and a greater choice of programmes.

Benefits of Digital TV:

  • Crisp, clear DVD quality pictures and sound delivered in a widescreen format
  • Improved reception, particularly in locations where it is difficult to get an analogue signal
  • More channels, many of which are not available on analogue television
  • Interactive features such as the Freeview 8-day onscreen TV guide that lets you preview and browse the TV guide for the next 8 days.

What is the Digital Switch Over (DSO)?

Analogue television transmission in New Zealand is to be switched off in several phases over the next two years and replaced by Digital transmission. The timing of this phased switchover is;

  • Hawkes Bay and West Coast of South Island - September 2012
  • Rest of South island - April 2013
  • Lower North Island (Wellington) - September 2013
  • Upper North Island - November 2013
